“For lack of a better word the EURUS department is cozy. Not only are the professors amazingly intelligent, they also actually care about each and every student, and are absolutely dedicated to helping us get the most out of this experience. The EURUS department at Carleton didn’t just meet my expectations it absolutely blew them away.” – Adriane Cartmell, MA Year 1
MA Courses
The approach of the Institute is interdisciplinary. EURUS offers you a wide range of seminars (including some taught by renowned visiting professors from the European Union and Russia). EURUS seminars are supplemented by courses and faculty expertise provided by cooperating departments including the Departments of Economics, Geography, History, Political Science, and the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs.
The Institute hosts a specially-designed two-part core seminar (EURR 5001 and EURR 5200 or 5300) for students in the MA program. Students select a concentration (Russian, Eurasian and Transition Studies OR European and European Union Studies), take additional course credits, and complete either a thesis (EURR 5908, 2.0 credits) or a research essay (EURR 5909, 1.0 credit). You will also be required to demonstrate proficiency in an approved regional language linked to his or her research interests. The most popular options are German, Russian, Spanish, French and Italian. Other students have utilized Swedish, Polish and Ukrainian.
Back to TopCareer Opportunities
EURUS prepares regional specialists who possess a variety of language, analytical, and writing skills to enter the job market or advanced degree programs (including PhD programs and law school) with a competitive advantage. An internship program, part of a credit course on applied skills, prepares our students for an effective transition to the working world. Through its close connections with public and private organizations as well as universities that deal with the region, the Institute is often able to assist its graduates in finding appropriate employment or further research and study opportunities.
