The Bounce Back Program is a new program at Carleton for the 2011-2012 academic year. The program is designed to provide support and encouragement to first-year students struggling academically.
Our program is largely modeled on the enormously successful Bounce Back program at the University of Guelph to which we owe a debt of gratitude for sharing their resources and supporting our initiative here at Carleton.
The Bounce Back program is a support program that will identify first-year undergraduate students who received an average of less than 60% (GPA of less than 4.0) in their first semester at Carleton. With the help of the Registrar’s Office, these students will be contacted via email inviting them to take part in this program. Those who opt-in will be partnered with an upper-year facilitator. The facilitators will work individually with each participant to help them identify the source(s) of their academic hardship in the fall semester and set new goals and identify strategies to achieve those goals over the course of the winter semester.
Bounce Back is a nine-week program beginning at the start of the winter semester and concluding in March. Facilitators will be responsible for meeting weekly (either in-person, over the phone or by email) with each of their students to ensure they are staying on track and making progress toward their goals. The three students who achieve the greatest academic improvement (measured by comparing their GPA at the conclusion of the fall semester and their GPA at the conclusion of the academic year) and meet the participation requirements will each be awarded a tuition credit valued at $750.
