Ongoing Placements with our partner organizations offer students the ability to get involved with an organization for a term or academic year. This is the ideal opportunity to “learn by doing” and become familiar with an organization you support.

You’ll work with a local community partner on a weekly or biweekly basis for 2-10 hours per week (depending on the organization and your agreement).

Support, Safety and Travel Tips for Commuters During Exam Time

Students, it’s that time of year again—exam time. This time of year can feel overwhelming when trying to balance increased school and social demands, so Carleton has a variety of different resources to support you during crunch time.

24 Hour Library Access

Take advantage of the 24 hour access to MacOdrum Library. Visit the MacOdrum website for hours on other dates and for more information.

If you’re coming onto campus at irregular or late times in order to squeeze in more studying, below are some travel resources for you.

Safety and Late Nights on Campus

There are a variety of initiatives including safe pathways and 24 hour patrol services that ensure campus is a safe and secure place for all students at all times.

Working after Hours Program

The working after hours program runs from Monday to Friday 10pm to 7am and 24 hours during weekends and statutory holidays. Students staying on campus can call in their location and have a safety officer check in with them throughout the evening. Other precautions can also be taken if desired.

Foot Patrol

Foot Patrol is a student-run, volunteer based campus safe-walk and patrol service. They operate on weekdays during the fall and winter semesters, and offer services to the entire greater Carleton Community: any students, faculty staff or visitors on or off campus. If you need someone to walk you around or off of campus up to 30 minutes away, simply call 613-520-4066.

CUSERT

The Carleton University Student Emergency Response Team provides free first aid on campus 24/7.

Travel

The Campus Card as payment for taxis

As a new feature this year, the three major Ottawa taxi companies will now accept your campus card as payment. If you don’t want to worry about bringing cash to campus you can easily load your campus card online or in person.

OC Travel planner

OC Transpo is Ottawa’s public transit system. The travel planner asks for your departure location and your destination, while giving you the best travel route during your time restraints. Bus schedules change later in the evening and on weekends. If you are planning on coming to or leaving from campus at a different time than usual, be sure to double check your route.

With over 40 different prizes to select from, the Student Experience Office’s Silent Auction can help you get a little holiday shopping done while supporting Alternative Spring Break. Items to be auctioned off include Sens tickets, a night out on the town, including a hotel stay, tickets to the NAC and much more! Come to the Atrium on Wednesday, November 30th and Thursday, December 1st and get your bid in.

Run by the SEO, ASB program provides students with the opportunity to participate in service-learning initiatives locally, nationally and internationally. This year 75 students will be volunteering their time in five different projects based in Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Vancouver and the Ottawa region during Reading Week.

CU Fit @ Night: Try Yoga, Try Dance, Win Stuff

Find your state of tranquility or learn ‘moves like Jagger’ at CU Fit @ Night. Carleton University students are invited to try free Yoga and Hip Hop Dance classes in the Department of Recreation and Athletics as part of the Student Experience Office’s CU @ NIGHT program.

In addition to being a fun, social activity, CU Fit @ Night will be an opportunity to learn more about Carleton’s unique recreation and athletics program offerings.

All students who attend are automatically entered in to a draw to win 1 of 4 Carleton travel mugs and cups, as well as limited edition CU @ NIGHT t-shirts.

CU @ NIGHT: Who Wants to be a Millionaire?

September 29, 2011 at 10:00pm, the Student Experience Office presents the first CU @ NIGHT event of the year, Who Wants to be a Millionaire? Come join your fellow students to play the popular television game show which offers contestants prizes for correctly answering a series of multiple-choice questions of increasing difficulty. Students will have the opportunity to win prizes and campus dollars!

Register your club, society or campus group with the Co-Curricular Record by March 1, 2011 and be entered for a chance to win a $500 voucher to use for your group’s programming/activities. Just by submitting your positions and involvement opportunities from your student group to the Co-Curricular Record (through the Submit an Activity function) you have a chance to win additional funds to support your group’s activities. For every position you submit to the CCR you will receive one ballot for this draw. Previously submitted positions will also be counted at one ballot per position. Become a Fall Orientation Facilitator

The Carleton University Students Association, Rideau River Residence Association and The Student Experience Office are currently looking for student volunteers in a variety of roles to help welcome new students into the Carleton community through the Fall Orientation Program. Fall Orientation is a one week program that occurs at the beginning of the fall semester for new students, focusing on their holistic integration into the Carleton Community through social, academic and cultural events.

Fall Orientation Volunteers will not only have the opportunity to get involved in student life on campus, but also meet a new and diverse group of people. Interested applicants can drop off their application forms CUSA office on the 4^th floor of the University before March 4^th 2010 at 6:00pm. The Student Experience Office (SEO) is currently looking for 9 student staff to fill Orientation Leader positions with Carleton University’s Summer Orientation program. Summer Orientation is a one-day program for new students and their parent(s) or guardian(s). The four month contract with the SEO will go from mid-May until early-September. If you are interested in supporting the transition process for incoming first year students and their parents, while gaining valuable leadership experience and career development opportunities, this may be the summer job for you. Additionally each Summer Orientation Leader will be leading one project or event management portfolio including: Alternative Spring Break, Parent Outreach, Community Service Learning, Fall Orientation; Event Planning among others.
