At Carleton University, becoming involved in the community is one of the best ways to ensure you make the most out of your student experience. If you’re looking to do so in a fun way that allows you to give back to the community, meet new people, gain transferable skills and even beef up your resume, you’re definitely ready for CSL!
Community Service-Learning (CSL) is a method of experiential, hands-on learning that emphasizes action, reflection and real-world engagement. Much more than just volunteerism, CSL supports students in the development of new skills and civic citizenship through combining community work and classroom learning. Our variety of CSL opportunities work for every program and year of study, and the best part is that CSL works around your schedule!
This website is your guide to everything you’ll need to make the most of CSL. Find out what CSL is, what opportunities exist within the program and who we partner with.

Alternative Spring Break
ASB is a unique opportunity to participate in an immersive service-learning project. This year-long program includes pre-departures, workshops and reflection activities and culminates in a full week of local, national, or international service. This is not your average spring break!
Carleton Serves
Carleton Serves is an annual Day of Service (September 24th) during which over 100 students head out into the greater-Ottawa community to work on a variety of service projects with our partner organizations. All you need is one day for this perfect introduction to CSL!
Days of Service
Twice a month, groups of students head out to work with a specific organization for between 3 and 5 hours. These one day projects are a great way for students to check out a number of community partners and get involved in CSL without a major time commitment. The rotating time schedule means that no matter what day and time you’re available, there’s a Day of Service for you!
Ongoing Placements
Ongoing placements are opportunities to work with one of our community partners on a regular basis over the course of the academic year. Dedicate a few hours every week towards providing service and see the long-term benefits to your partners along the way!
