Home / Carleton on Homelessness / Initiatives at Carleton University / Batawa Project

Create a whole new world.

An interdisciplinary initiative dedicated to the construction of a sustainable and innovative living environment with a focus on research and learning. Carleton University has teamed with the village of Batawa to create a sustainable community that Sonja Bata plans to develop as a model for the world.

As part of their 2009 summer course work, Carleton Architecture and Industrial Design students spent several weeks on site creating different visions, designs and prototypes for the village.

It’s the kind of unique collaboration – a “living laboratory” that Carleton and Batawa would like to expand so that every faculty in the university is involved in some way.

Batawa project brings together the Architecture and Industrial Design students as well their instructors and Carleton faculty, Marco Frascari, Stephen Fai, Sheryl Boyle and Thomas Garvey with project director Katherine Graham. The project reflects the importance and potential of university-community engagement in developing sustainable strategies in response to homelessness, housing and urban/environmental design. Furthermore, the project seeks to promote sustainable livelihoods and boost economic activity.
