Beyond the training offered through the EDC, there are a number of training options made available to SCS TAs through the Mentor program. A description of the available mentor-based training options can be found below.

  • Workshops
  • Microteaching
  • Workshop Creation
  • Written Articles
  • TA Peer Groups

Workshops

Each semester, there are 2-3 workshops offered by the SCS TA Mentor. These workshops are typically 1-1.5 hours in length and cover various topics relating to teaching in Computer Science. Additionally, extra workshops may be made available by experienced TAs who chose to take on the role of workshop creator, as described in the Workshop Creation section below. For TAs working towards the EDC Certificate in TA Skills, each workshops attended will count for one certificate credit.

Microteaching

Each semester, there will be 2-3 microteaching sessions offered by the SCS TA Mentor. These sessions allow individuals to practice their presentation and teaching skills in a closed, safe environment comprised of a small number of colleagues. Individuals prepare 10-15 minute presentations which are observed by other participants who provide feedback on the presenter’s strengths and areas of growth. As with workshops, each microteaching session can be counted as one credit toward the EDC Certificate in TA Skills.

Workshop Creation

The role of workshop creator allows TAs to research, develop and present their own workshop on a chosen topic. Creating and presenting a workshop is counted as 2 credits toward the EDC Certificate in TA Skills. More details on workshop creation can be found on the Workshop Creation page.

Written Articles

Article writing is another time-flexible training option that allows TAs to research and write about a topic of interest. Submitted articles will be used to create a supplementary online resource for SCS TAs. While the EDC Certificate in TA Skills requires an article to be written, further articles can be counted as 1 certificate credit per article. More information on the article writing process can be found on the Written Articles page.

TA Peer Groups

Peer groups are designed to be a time-flexible and peer-based training option. These groups can meet regularly to discuss issues group members have faced or other teaching-related topics. Group members working toward the EDC Certificate in TA Skills will receive 1 certificate credit for every 2 peer group meetings. To sign up or get more information, please go to the TA Peer Groups page.
